LIVING IT - CULTURE - CDS

Using music for creative worship - Ben Askew

Travis - TurnMy other use of music is finding songs that express something about God, the world or our culture that can be used in worship, the list for these is endless but here are a few… (album title in brackets)

Goldie - Inner City Life (Timeless)
DJ Shadow - Midnight in a perfect World (Endtroducing)
Travis - Turn (The man Who)
Marvin Gaye - anything off What's Going on?
A man called Adam - Easter Song (Café del Mar volume two) + Estelle (Café del Mar Volume One)
Bob Marley - Redemption Song (also a good, but slightly cheesy ambient version of this on Café del Mar Volume three)
Massive Attack - Protection (Protection) numerous different remix versions exist in other places too, some of which just have the refrain - "I'll stand in front of you, I'll take the force of the blow, protection" powerful!
Primal Scream - Movin' on Up and Come together (Screamadelica) + Keep Your Dreams (Xtrmntr)
Lamb -Gorecki (Lamb)
Faithless - God is a DJ (Sunday Morning 2am) + We come one (Outrospective)
Asian Dub Foundation - Colour line, Truth Hides, Committed to life (Community Music) these are particularly about justice issues.
U2 - Still Haven't Found (an oldie but a goodie) (The Joshua Tree) + Grace - (All that you can't leave behind)
Zero Seven - Destiny (Simple Things)- a great love song that can be directed upwards.
Dido - Thank you (No Angel)- same again
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentleman we are floating in space, Lord I have a broken Heart, Cool Wave (Ladies and Gentleman we are floating in Space) and probably loads off the new album too (Let it come down).
Nina Simone - I wish that I knew how it feels to be free
Groove Armada - My Friend (Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub)

That's a big list and some of it may not speak to you or your group - but the best thing to do is to use stuff that is meaningful to you and your peers now! So into Hip Hop? - find something there, Nu Metal? -do the same (maybe some POD as a starter). I'm wanting to work out some way of using "My Sweet Lord" the George Harrison song. I reckon it would carry a lot of emotion and be very powerful to use if we do it quickly (and made judicious use of a fade out towards the end).

Get stuck into the rest...

Instrumental music - to create a soundtrack to go behind your worship
Christian groups' chill out and dance

So that's it - be creative and find stuff that works for you. But remember at the end of the day its about the one you're worshipping not the way you do it, so keep focused on him. If you're using stuff for a group though then it might be good to be relevant, use the music they are likely to be listening to at home.
