Does it matter how much money I have?
Does it matter how much money? Can I be a Christian and be
financially secure, even rich? This is a question that has
been debated over and over again by Christians and even non-Christians.
If I was to be asked, my answer would simply be 'No, not at
all.' I've heard people use the argument that your pride shows
in how much money you hoard up in your bank account. The story
found in Mark 10:17, the story of the rich man is used to
support the argument that you need to live a life of poverty
to inherit eternal life. Although I can see what people are
making from this passage, I believe it is a misinterpretation.
I'll begin by saying it's the love of money that is the root
of evil, not money itself. Within the passage of the rich
young man, I believe that Jesus says that he had love for
money and possibly found too much security in it. Trusting
in and loving money was the rich young man's downfall, not
the fact that he had money. The love of money is a love that
consumes. It can make one delusional. Judas is a prime example
of this. I believe that Judas was genuinely in awe and in
love with Christ yet in the end he sold the Saviour for thirty
pieces of silver. God the Father does not look at how much
wealth you have accumulated over the years. God looks at the
heart. God wants your heart to belong to Him and not to your
wealth.
People need money to survive - fact. I would go as far to
say the church would not function/survive without money. The
more money you have, the more you can give to the church.
The more you can give to the church, the more the church can
increase in evangelism and all the other things that the church
needs money to accomplish.
Money and wealth are good things if you're responsible and
love God with all your heart. Money is ok if you would be
ok to give it up.
