THE
SQUARE
Discipling and leadership styles
The discipleship square is a tool for understanding the way
that Jesus discipled the twelve, and applying the same principles
to our own lives. We would recognise that every Christian
is called to be both a disciple and one who disciples others.
We see four distinct styles of leadership which Jesus employed
at different stages as he discipled the twelve. We call these
D1, D2, D3 and D4.
Explainations
of the 4 different styles:
i. (D1) A classical, directive style. The disciples are enthusiastic
and confident, but inexperienced and incompetent. Jesus is
high on direction and example, and low on consensus. Examples:
Matt 4: 19, Mk 1: 15-18, Lk 5: 4-5
ii. (D2) A visionary, coaching style. The disciples have
now lost a lot of enthusiasm, and are aware of their incompetence.
Jesus remains directive and high on example, but is much more
accessible, spending a lot of time talking to the disciples.
Example: Lk 11, 12.
iii. (D3) A democratic, consensus style. The disciples are
gaining confidence and are becoming more competent. Jesus
remains accessible and is spending a lot of time with the
disciples, but is much less directive. The disciples play
a greater part in decision making. Example: Jn 15: 1-8
iv. (D4) A delegating style. The disciples are now competent
and highly experienced. Jesus explains a lot of detail to
the disciples, but is very low on direction and example, instead
commissioning them to continue. Example: Matt 28: 18-20.
