Did you vote? This is an article that'll get you clued up
on politics...
As Christians we are called to take an active role in society.
The local and national elections are important and we must
be part of the process. But that doesn't change the fact that
a fair few of us are less than clued up on what exactly is
going on. So below we present the bluffers guide to the 2001
elections...
| 1. "There's
no WWJV (What Would Jesus Vote?) Party" |
Well why
don't you ask the good Lord how he wants you to vote? |
| 2. "I
know nothing" |
There
is still time. For answers to frequently asked questions
about voting, go
here> |
| 3. "Politicians
are corrupt" |
Just like
the rest of us then. If you don't vote, then you can't
complain about the issues either. |
| 4. "Oh
I live such a busy life…" |
Try and
squeeze in the 10 minutes it will take every 5 years to
get to your local polling booth. |
| 5. "God's
not into Politics" |
So you've
not read the Bible then? Try starting with Daniel. Or
for a God in Politics Bible Study, go
here> |
| 6. "One
vote's not going to change the world" |
All that
it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to sit
on their back-sides because they can't be bothered. |
| 7. "Everyone
knows that Labour are going to win again." |
In the
100 or so UK constituencies with majorities of fewer than
5,000, a relatively small number of voters will affect
who is elected to Westminster. |
| 8. "Politicians
are boring old farts" |
True,
but we may as well have some good ones |
| 9. "Can't
I do it over the net?" |
No, sorry.
But if you are on holiday you can apply for a postal vote
before 23 May. Anyway, get away from that computer screen
for ten minutes. The fresh air will do you good. |
| 10. All
the parties say basically the same thing. |
Then find
out what the individual candidates think about issues
that are important to you. Go along to an event at which
they are speaking. |
