LIVING IT - SOCIAL ACTION - ENGAGING WITH IT PERSONALLY

Speak up - don't be shy!

'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.' - Proverbs 31, 8-9

We live in a democracy - so speak up! It is a massive privilege, and one we often take for granted, but God sees all that we have and says 'much is expected from you.'

If you're thinking you don't have much influence - it's a lie! It doesn't take much to get politicians to take notice. If your whole church wrote on one issue you'd cause a stir in Westminster. God gives us His authority to seek his kingdom, so use it!

'But Jesus didn't get involved in politics' - Rubbish! Jesus was radically subversive of the power structures in his society; he spoke and lived for the outcast, loved the Samaritan, liberated women, touched lepers, condemned the Pharisees to their faces - and now he's the King of Kings, the one who reigns and intervenes in our world to subvert injustice and institute his kingdom. All he seeks are servants to do the work…

'But I don't know anything about the issues' - It's not difficult to get in touch with someone who does! If you've got a church rep. for Tearfund, speak to them. Get in touch with the World Development Movement, Tearfund, Amnesty International, Oxfam…just start somewhere!

'I don't have time' - It takes ten minutes to write a letter. Who're you kidding?

Got any ideas for how to get involved?
