FireStarters isn't a church as such, although many
of the young people involved see it as their spiritual
home as they come from church environments that are
not very condusive to spiritual growth! It is a youth
mission team under the banner of YWAM here in Scotland.
Our mission statement is 'A Generation Set on Fire for
Jesus to be Sparks of Revival'.
The ages of those in the team spread from 10-25+ and
there are about 220 of us this year. The teams are led
by young leaders 17-25years, who are training as they
go!!
We meet once a month for a weekend all through the
academic year, have a time all together on the Friday
evening to worship and have some challenging teaching,
then split into 10 different teams to go and partner
with various churches to do evangelism and mission work
of varying kinds. Each year sees changes and this year
we have teams reaching out to:
a) young people and assylum seeker families in Sitehill,
an inner city area of Glasgow
b) young people in Bearsden, a wealthy suburb of Glasgow
c) primary age kids in Ferguslie Park, an inner city
area of Paisley
d) young people in Glenburn, a housing scheme in Paisley
e) primary age kids in Wester Hailes, an inner city
area of Edinburgh - this team also does steet work in
the city centre
f) folk on the streets of Stirling - street evangelsm
and open air worship
g) primary age kids and their families in Dundee
h) young people in different towns in Ayrshire - this
team travels around towns in Ayrshire doing street evangelism
and youth nights
We do all this through youth events and drop-in evenings
as well as open air evangelism. It is a real challenge
to the teenagers involved to own and share their faith
in a relevant way!
We have an intercession team, also made up of teenagers
with a passion to hear and follow God, that travels
round the other FireStarters teams to encourage and
help them to pray for their area of mission. This has
been a great inspiration to everyone who has been blessed
by their ministry.
Another commitment we have is to disciple teenagers
from every walk of life, and not all from comfortable
Christian homes! It can be really tough going for these
folk, but they are a real encouragement to us as they
discover the ways of God and seek to follow Him.
We are starting to see folk coming to know Jesus and
it's very exciting.....but spare a thought to pray for
us - we are not without our struggles and it is still
just as tough as ever it was to live for Jesus a a teenager,
but we are blessed to have all these young people taking
a stand and saying they want to be 'A Generation Set
on Fire for Jesus to be Sparks of Revival' Praise God!
