TRIBE : St. Thomas Church - Lancaster

Mission Statement:

"Worshipping God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit together and in our homes, and supporting one another in service and faithful obedience to the Scriptures, we proclaim Jesus Christ, Lord and Saviour, as part of the world-wide body of Christ."

Members of St. Thomas' are committed to:

  1. Worship - Worshipping our Creator and Saviour, celebrating the Lord together and at home.
  2. Mission - Welcoming others continually as we share our testimony of Jesus Christ.
  3. Ministry - Serving Jesus by serving one another wherever we are, using our time, God-given skills, possessions and money.
  4. Fellowship - Supporting one another in spiritual growth, Christian ministry, and through the joys and sorrows of life.
  5. Discipleship - Learning and sharing from Scripture how to live in the real world in the obediance of faith.

The whole mission of the church is for people, and our strategy is to strengthen individual participation in the following:

  • People in ongoing Prayer - seeking to be "in touch" with the Lord's agenda and interceed for people, the locality, nation, and the world!
  • People as leaders - being disciples of Jesus, and being disciplers of others.
  • Encouraging potential leaders and nurturing their faith.
  • People as witnesses for Jesus Christ - personal witnessing through lifestyle and faith in the real world.
  • People progressing in True Discipleship - challenging teaching from the Word, and the application of it in life.
  • People living as a Community - building relationships through house groups, clusters and acts of service to the wider community.

Situated in centre of Lancaster city, we have a Victorian building that seats 300-500 people depending on configuration. Most Sundays we run 3 services, but we also run a traditional early morning communion service one Sunday a month. The 10-30am service is mainly attended by families, and once a month we have an "all age service". At 6-15pm our second service begins, then at 9pm, the Late Evening Service (LES commences). The LES is attended mainly by Univeristy students and other "young people" from the locality, some of whom are already committed to other churches. We usually see around 700 people across the 3 services on Sundays.

Through the year we run many events. In 2001-2002 we ran 5 separate Alpha courses, 2 for adults, 2 for students, and 1 youth alpha. This coming year we will run another 4 Alpha courses as well as organising the North-West Alpha conference in October 2002. As well as having special services at Christmas and Easter, we also celebrate the 2 Jewish festivals, Passover and Tabernacles.

As well as regular events such as house groups and clusters (the name given to several house groups meeting together), we run teaching seminars with our staff team or guest speakers. Over the next year we will have teaching on parenthood and managing finances, as well as regular "mens breakfasts".

Youth work in the church continues to grow under the leadership of a dedicated Youth Pastor. As well as young people's groups on Friday evenings, and along with Junior church on Sundays, a drop-in centre has been established one day per week for secondary school pupils from years 7-9. Weekends away also feature in the young people's activities, as do concert trips and school visits.

The Director of Music is responsible for leading worship and providing worship teams for all services, Alpha groups, and special occasions. There are currently around 45 active members of the worship team, which works on a rota basis. We aim to make inspired use of the liturgy, hymns and songs, and take responsibility for leading God's people into His presence on a weekly basis. Our worship style is mainly contemporary, but traditional, and other styles of worship are also used. We continue to explore ways of using the Creative Arts in our worship.

A recently installed video system allows projection of words, Bible passages, powerpoint presentations, live video links, video recordings etc on 2 large screens and 8 monitors. We also have a fairly new sound system, offering superb quality when operated by well trained persons!
